Weapons used in San Bernardino Attack were all purchased in California, so California's governor attacks gun laws in neighboring states?
While President Obama and Hillary Clinton have been touting the gun laws found in California, Colorado, and Oregon as the solution to mass public shootings, they ignore that the laws that they want to impose on the rest of the US failed to stop the crimes they claimed that they would stop in those states. Even worse, while the existing laws didn’t stop shootings of the very kind Clinton claims that they will stop, they use these failures to justify imposing similar laws on the rest of the country. Now Governor Jerry Brown, trying to divert attention from California's failed policies, is attacking neighboring states. From Fox News:
Brown told the Sacramento Bee that Nevada and Arizona are a “gigantic back door through which any terrorist can walk.” Brown was in France for climate talks and was noncommittal on whether to strengthen the state’s gun control laws.
“California has some of the toughest gun control laws of any state,” Brown said. “And Nevada and Arizona are wide open, so that’s a gigantic back door through which any terrorist can walk.” . . .
The weapons used in the atrocity committed by Sayed Riswan Farook and Tashfeen Malik were purchased legally in California. . . .
Leading anti-gun attorney arrested after airport security found handgun in carry-on bag
His explanation for why he has a gun in his carry-on bag seems very credible. It is interesting that he appears to have been in the process of getting a concealed handgun permit. From the Cleveland Plain Dealer:
David Malik was arrested about 4:15 p.m. after airport security found an unloaded .22 caliber handgun and a box of ammunition in his carry-on bag, records show.
"I participated in a target shooting class recently with a certified CCW instructor and I simply forgot to remove it from my bag," Malik said in a statement. "I used the bag to pack for my trip. It was a stupid mistake."
Malik spent Saturday night in jail and was released on bond Sunday morning, according to Steve Loomis, president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association.
He is scheduled to appear at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in Cleveland Municipal Court.
"What's interesting about David is he is such an anti-gun person," Loomis said. . . .
UPDATE: From today. He seems to be agreeing that he accidentally carried the gun in his carry-on bad, so it isn't clear why he is pleading not guilty. From the Cleveland Plain Dealer:
Democrat Gubernatorial Candidate in Texas, Wendy Davis, just said that she supported open carry as a way to win political support, she didn't really believe it
This past June, Wendy Davis painted herself as being pro-gun on many issues (from open carry to allowing permitted concealed handguns to be stored in people's cars on college campuses to reducing training for permits). Democrats, of course, denied the claim that Davis was really anti-gun and just pretending to be pro-self defense. As the argument went this past summer, from Politico:
Davis has said she supports expanding gun rights in Texas. In a statement to the Associated Press, she said that includes open-carry — a position that puts her at odds with her own party but could keep her from alienating gun rights advocates in a deeply conservative state where the Second Amendment is sacrosanct. . . .
Davis, who said she keeps a gun at her home for protection, supported legislation last year to allow college students with concealed handgun licenses to keep their weapons in their cars. She also voted for reduced training requirements to get such a license.
Still, gun rights advocates were skeptical. Texas State Rifle Association spokeswoman Alice Tripp noted Davis' previous calls for more restrictions on gun show sales and past votes against allowing concealed license holders to carry their guns in classrooms and buildings on college campuses.
"Wendy Davis has a very bad record as far as gun owners go," Tripp said, calling Davis an "opportunist."
Abbott spokesman Adviel Huerta expressed a similar sentiment. . . .
But veteran Democratic consultant Harold Cook said Abbott supporters have already tried to portray Davis as anti-gun.
"If the issue isn't important to you, then it would be smart to take it off the table by saying, 'Me, too; now let's go back to talking about education and how we fund road building and the stuff the mainstream of Texas is really concerned with,'" he said. . . .
Well, now Davis says that she really didn't believe her promise and just said it to get elected. She told the San Antonio newspaper:
Note: I am not a big fan of open carry, so it isn't upsetting to me that she didn't support it, but saying she did when she really didn't is the problem.
According to his affidavit from this spring's court case, the retired trooper was asked during a State House Judiciary subcommittee hearing, where he was called to testify, if the ban would have an effect on crime in Maryland.
"As I began to respond, I was commanded by Shanetta Paskel, the Deputy Legislative Officer for the Office of Governor Martin O'Malley, not to answer the delegate's question," McCauley said in court papers.
The trooper said he acquiesced to her request because he believed she was his superior in the administration. But, had he been able to answer, he said he would have told the delegate that the banned firearms are almost never used in crimes in the state -- less than 5 percent involve them -- and that it would have no effect on mass shootings since stricter mental health protections were more important. . . .
It turns out that even a diehard gun control advocate state Senator carries a concealed handgun for protection
An anti-gun state Senator in Missouri was caught carrying a concealed handgun with her at a protest in Ferguson Missouri. There is obviously no problem with her carrying, though in this case she was drunk, but it is interesting how she understands the benefit of having a gun for self protection. From KMOV:
Nasheed declined comment about the having the weapon, but did tell News 4 she has a concealed carry permit. A Ferguson police officer said Nasheed was carrying a fully-loaded 9mm handgun and additional rounds of ammunition. . . .
Nasheed was formally charged with Failure to Obey Lawful Order of Police and Manner of Walking in the Roadway. She was released from St. Ann jail before 11:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. . . .
Prominent gun control advocate California Senator Leland Yee pushes for laws the law-abiding obey, but says he doesn't care about criminals getting guns
The problem with gun control is that it mainly disarms law-abiding, good citizens. Yee fought for laws that stopped law-abiding citizens from getting guns, but behind the scenes he helped criminals get them. The statement below obviously refers to criminals getting guns. From Fox News:
"People want to get whatever they want to get. Do I care? No, I don't care. People need certain things," he said, according to the complaint.
Court documents say he was just one of more than two dozen people caught up in the five-year federal probe. Initially, agents were interested in going after Raymond “Shrimp Boy” Chow, a notorious gangster who ran a Chinese criminal organization with ties to Hong Kong.
According to the FBI’s 137-page complaint, Chow and five other defendants laundered $2.3 million for undercover agents between March 2011 and December 2013. According to the FBI, the defendants were told the money came from crimes like illegal gambling, drug dealing and marijuana growing.
Chow, who was previously convicted on gun charges, was recently celebrated by the Chinese community in the area as an example of successful rehabilitation. He has been praised in recent months for his work in the immigrant-heavy community.
Most of the suspects netted in the FBI investigation are linked to the Chinatown brotherhood association that Chow heads known as Ghee Kung Tong. The group’s headquarters were raided Wednesday and members were charged with trafficking in illicit guns, liquor and cigarettes. . . .
UPDATED: One of California's strongest gun control politicians arrested on firearms trafficking charges: State Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco)
California State Senator Leland Yee is well known for pushing for more stringent gun control regulations. For example, on his website you can still find this announcement:
The FBI would not divulge details on what led to the arrests, or what the individuals are charged with, but local reports claim Yee has been charged with public corruption and bribery. . . .
UPDATE: Now it is clear that Yee was arrested for trafficking firearms. Only in the ninth paragraph does the Los Angeles Times briefly mention that Yee has been a gun control advocate, though even this understates how important of an advocate Yee has been both in California and nationally. From the Los Angeles Times:
State Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) was charged Wednesday with conspiring to commit wire fraud and traffic firearms, part of a sweeping public corruption case outlined by federal prosecutors.
The charges sent shock waves through the San Francisco and Sacramento political establishments, as FBI agents searched Yee's Capitol office. . . .
The indictment alleges Yee and Jackson defrauded "citizens of honest services" and were involved in a scheme to traffic firearms in exchange for thousands in campaign donations to the senator.
Federal prosecutors also allege Yee agreed to perform official acts in exchange for the money, including one instance in which he introduced a businessman to state legislators who had significant influence over pending medical marijuana legislation. In exchange, the businessman -- who was actually an undercover FBI agent -- agreed to donate thousands to Yee's campaign fund, according to the indictment.
The indictment also describes an August 2013 exchange in which Jackson told an undercover officer that Yee had an arms-trafficking contact. Jackson allegedly said Yee could facilitate a meeting for a donation. . . . The gun charges go against Yee's stand as a gun control advocate. In 2006, Yee was named to the Gun Violence Prevention Honor Roll by the Brady Campaign for his efforts that included co-authoring a first-in-the-nation bill to require new semiautomatic handguns be equipped with ballistics identification technology known as micro-stamping. In 2013, he stood with law enforcement officials and then-Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to propose a bill that would regulate assault weapons. . . .
The Los Angeles Times could have gone into this much more. But it was more than what the San Jose Mercury News mentioned in its 7th paragraph.
CBS News in San Francisco doesn't even mention Yee was a gun control advocate. Of course, the left wing TPM and NPR don't mention the gun control angle in the body of their stories, though NPR does contain a note under the picture that it has of Yee.
Bloomberg paying for ads that both support and oppose Democrats who voted against the Senate background check bill last April, was he not serious about gun control?
This is actually pretty funny. The most endangered Senate Democrats this next year just happen to be the ones that voted against the background check bill in the Senate last year. They were also the ones that are getting the most help from the Democratic Senate Majority PAC, which Bloomberg just gave $2.5 million to. But these were also the Democrats that Bloomberg was attacking in last year. Bloomberg has enough money to spend some on adds attacking these Democrats and then give even more to finance ads that will defend them, but does that mean that Bloomberg wasn't really serious about pushing them on gun control? From Mediaite:
“There had been information that I had as recently as two weeks ago that he was resisting pressure from both [Sens. Charles] Schumer (D-NY) and [Harry] Reid (D-NV) to defend Mark Pryor, or not to attack Mark Pryor, on the gun issue,” MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell said of Bloomberg’s latest move on Tuesday.
Mitchell observed that Bloomberg had previously appeared to be “single issue focused on guns at the risk of jeopardizing Senate for Democrats.” TIME Magazine reporter Mark Halperin confirmed that Bloomberg not only resisted pressure from the two highest ranking Democrats in the Senate, but also former President Bill Clinton, who asked Bloomberg to temper his enthusiasm for attacking politicians who oppose stricter gun laws if those politicians happen to be Democrats.
Halperin added that, while there are many Democrats in the Senate up for reelection this year, they all enjoy some advantages; including strong fundraising, weak Republican challengers, and incumbency itself. These incumbents, he insisted, may hang on in November in spite of six-year midterm headwinds, but attacking these Senate Democrats from the left could imperil them by reducing the base’s enthusiasm.
CNN reports that the Democratic Super PAC to which Bloomberg donated millions has already gone up with ads in support of some of this election cycle’s most embattled Senate Democrats, including Pryor, Kay Hagan (D-NC) and Mark Begich (D-AK). Each voted “no” on a resolution that would have banned high-capacity magazines in April of last year. Thus, Bloomberg has financially rooted himself on both sides of the guns issue. . . .
Given that Bloomberg ran a $12 million ad campaign in the run up to the Senate background check vote, that he spent money on other races and on guns leading up to the Newtown anniversary, and that he spent $14.1 million in ads for the entire year, it is very clear that the $2.5 million that he gave to the Democratic PAC is much greater than the amount that he spent on ads against Senate Democrats who voted against the background checks after their vote.
Hypocrisy: Michael Bloomberg taking his police security detail with him as he leaves the mayor's office
Bloomberg understands why someone such as himself wants armed body guards, but he has no sympathy for mere private citizens who probably face even greater risks from crime. From the New York Post:
While Bloomberg’s security detail has 17 members, not all will be riding his gravy-train run.
The unidentified lieutenant who heads the team will land the biggest windfall and “is getting paid a lot more than the detectives,” a source said.
The NYPD provides Bloomberg with ’round-the-clock protection that includes a driver, bodyguard and advance man who secures the mayor’s destination whenever the mayor is out and about. . . .
But City Hall sources noted that in the past, ex-mayors including Ed Koch, David Dinkins and Rudy Giuliani were all provided taxpayer-funded NYPD bodyguards after they left office.
In Giuliani’s case, the cost ran nearly $1 million a year, with detectives protecting the ex-mayor along with his mother, Helen; then-estranged wife, Donna Hanover; children Caroline and Andrew; and his then-girlfriend, Judith Nathan.
At the time, Bloomberg defended the expense, noting that Giuliani “took a number of positions that were in the interest of the public, some of which were very controversial, and there are a lot of crazy people out there.” . . .
"White House rejects call for ‘Gun Free Zone’ around Obama, Biden," What works for Obama apparently doesn't apply to other Americans
Like every one from Rosie O'Donnell, David Brock, Jim Carrey, Justice Stephen Breyer, former Mayor Richard Daley, and many others, Obama says that his safety justifies allowing guns to defend himself. He just doesn't think that the same rules should apply to others. From The Hill newspaper:
The “We the People” petition was submitted nine days after the elementary school shooting last year in Newtown, Conn. It called for the elimination of armed guards that protect the president and vice president and the establishment of "Gun Free Zones" around them — a reference to a federal law that bans firearms on school grounds.
The petition garnered more than 40,000 signatures, enough to trigger an automatic response from the White House.
The White House dismissed the call to disarm the president's security detail, noting that Congress mandated full-time protection of the president after the third assassination of a sitting president in 1901. . . .
Fox News: "Experiment measures crime after free gun giveaway"
Fox News has an interest discussion available here on experiments across the country that are trying to help arm poor people in high crime areas.
The most interesting takeaway from this segment is how liberals claim that they support the right of people to defend themselves, but even when poor people in high crime areas pass background checks and get training, gun control advocates still seem to find all sorts of reasons to object to these people owning guns.
