Mass Public Shooting in Naples, Italy: Killing four (may be five) people and wounding at least five more

It is very unlikely that you have heard of this story.  Article from the UK Daily Mail:

A man armed with a shotgun opened fire in the southern Italian city of Naples, killing four people and wounding at least five more. 

The 48-year-old nurse, Roberto Murolo, killed first his brother and sister-in-law at home, according to Italian police, before killing two more members of the public after he began shooting from the balcony.  

Early reports indicate that he may also have killed his wife in the attack, in the Secondigliano suburb, although these reports have not yet been confirmed.

"Gunmen kill 15 at college in north Nigeria's Kano"

This attack is deadlier than the Columbine school shooting.  It is deadlier than the Washington Navy Yard or Aurora Movie Theater shootings.  In each of those three attacks, 12 people were killed.  From Reuters:

Gunmen stormed a higher education college in northern Nigeria on Wednesday, firing on fleeing students and setting off an explosion in an attack that killed at least 15 people and wounded 35, police said. . . . "The attackers were wearing suits and were running and shooting everywhere." . . .  At least 82 people were killed in July in a double suicide bombing in the north Nigerian city of Kaduna in July. . . .

Mass public shooting in Belgium, four dead at Brussels Jewish Museum

Muslim terrorist kills four people at the Jewish Museum in Brussels.  Despite a five year prison term for a violent crime, somehow the killer was able to obtain what is claimed to be a machine gun.  From the BBC:

Police found Mr Nemmouche had in his possession a Kalashnikov rifle and a handgun believed to have been used in the attack, the Paris prosecutor told a news conference on Sunday. . . .At the time of his arrest, authorities say he had a machine gun wrapped in the flag of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) . . .The 29-year-old was in prison for five years in France for robbery and released in December 2012, Mr Molins said. . . . .

Jews apparently targeted in shooting at Brussels Jewish Museum: three dead, one seriously wounded

Three people were killed and one badly injured in a shoot-out Saturday near the Jewish Museum in Brussels city centre, Belga news agency said, quoting firefighters' emergency services.
"I am shocked by the murders committed at the Jewish museum, I am thinking of the victims I saw there and their families," Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said on Twitter. . . .

Multiple victim public shooting in Turkey: "7 Shot Dead in Turkey After Fired Worker Takes Hostages"

Seven people were shot dead in Turkey on Wednesday after a man returned to his office after being fired and took his colleagues hostage, local news agencies reported. 

The man turned the gun on himself during the incident at the Turkish Statistical Institute in the eastern province of Kars, officials told Turkey’s Anadolu Agency and others. 

"Someone who was dismissed from his job ran amok and killed six people, before committing suicide," Kars Governor Eyup Tepe said in a statement reported by the Dogan News Agency. . . . 

the hostages were killed before the units arrived at the scene, the Dogan News Agency reported . . . .

Turkey already has strict gun control laws.

In Turkey, only licensed gun owners may lawfully acquire, possess or transfer a firearm or ammunition. Applicants for a gun owner’s license in Turkey are required to prove genuine reason to possess a firearm, for example, hunting, target shooting, collection, personal protection, security. The minimum age for gun ownership in Turkey is 21 years.  An applicant for a firearm license in Turkey must pass a background check which considers criminal, mental, domestic violence, medical, and addiction records.  In Turkey gun owners must re-apply and re-qualify for their firearm license every five years.

Paris manhunt for just released prisoner who went on shooting spree

Police were conducting a frantic manhunt Monday for a gunman suspected in two shootings and a brief hostage-taking that stunned Paris and which authorities were treating as possibly terrorist-related. 

One man, a photographer's assistant, was in critical condition after being shot in the chest at the offices of a national newspaper, police said. 

Authorities seemed to be at a loss as to the gunman's identity or motive, and appealed for witnesses to come forward to help track him down. The 65-year-old man who had been briefly taken hostage told police that his assailant claimed to have a hand grenade and said he had just gotten out of jail. 

"Our main lead is that there is a single perpetrator," prosecutor François Molins told a news conference. He said his staff was investigating any possible motivation, including terrorism. . . .

Another mass shooting in Brazil: Despite extremely strict gun control laws and only a few percent of the population owning guns

A total of seven people were killed in this mass shooting.  From the Voice of Russia:

The motive of the crime late Thursday in Realengo was unknown, police spokesman Pablo Rodrigues said. 

"We cannot rule out any hypotheses," he said. "We will investigate the chance that the massacre might have been caused by the group's debts with drug dealers. That is one hypothesis, but we have not ruled out others."  

Five men and two women, aged 21 to 37, were killed by handguns and rifles on the veranda of the house, local media reported. . . .

Man carrying gun at Nairobi Mall saved a 100 lives

UPDATED: Apparently, it was an "Ex Royal Marine with a handgun saved 100 lives as terrorists ran amok."  It also appears that he was able to carry a gun because he had a job with either a private security agency or the Kenyan government.  Fortunately, he just happened to be near the mall having coffee with friends.   Question: Would gun control advocates let former soldiers carry guns in the US?

ORIGINAL POST:  Fortunately for 100 people this off-duty British Special Air Service had his handgun with him.  From the UK Daily Mail:

An off-duty member of the SAS emerged as a hero of the Nairobi siege yesterday, after he was credited with saving up to 100 lives. 

The soldier was having coffee at the Westgate mall when it was attacked by Islamists on Saturday. 

With a gun tucked into his waistband, he was pictured helping two women from the complex. 

He is said to have returned to the building on a dozen occasions, despite intense gunfire.A friend in Nairobi said: ‘What he did was so heroic. He was having coffee with friends when it happened. 

‘He went back in 12 times and saved 100 people. Imagine going back in when you knew what was going on inside.’ . . .

Side note:  What lessons will Americans take from this?

The suburban Minneapolis mall, owned by real estate development and finance company Triple Five Group of Edmonton, Alberta, is monitoring the news from Nairobi and working with law-enforcement agencies, the center’s management said today in an e-mailed statement. The Bloomington, Minnesota, property, which opened in 1992, has more than 520 stores, an indoor amusement park, an aquarium and a movie theater. 

“Mall of America has implemented extra security precautions,” according to the statement. “Some may be noticeable to guests, and others won’t be. We will continue to follow the situation, along with law enforcement, and will remain vigilant as we always do in similar situations.” . . . . 

Kenyabans both open and concealed carrying of firearms, but that didn’t stop the terrorists from using guns.  Apparently, this Ex Royal Marine may have had a job with a private security agency or the Kenyan government.  From the UK Independent:

The British military regularly train and operate in East Africa, often using Kenya as a base for tracking UK citizens suspected of being involved in terrorist activities in Somalia and Kenya. 

A large number of former soldiers continue to live in the country after their service ends, working as security personnel for private agencies and the Kenyan government. . . .

New total: At least 68 dead and 175 injured at mall in Nairobi

With this large number of injuries and many hostages still being held, there will undoubtedly be more deaths.  One more death and this attack in Nairobi will equal the causalities in Norway's attack.  From Fox News:

Dozens of hostages are holed up in an upscale shopping mall in Kenya's capital, forced to hide from gunmen following an attack by suspected members of an Al Qaeda-linked Somali militant group on Saturday that left at least 68 dead and 175 injured. 

The Kenyan military remained in a tense standoff with Islamic extremists in Nairobi on Sunday, as barrages of gunfire were heard inside the mall, Reuters reports. 

Kenya’s president, Uhuru Kenyatta, said in a national address that security forces had managed to isolate the “criminals” in one place inside the building, according to Reuters. Two helicopters were seen flying over the mall. 

There are between 50 to 200 hostages and most of them are hiding in various places inside the mall, Fox News confirms. They are not being held by the hostage-takers. There are between 10 to 15 militants currently inside the mall, with at least one being female. . . .

Meanwhile in Pakistan, there was a horrible bombing attack.

A pair of suicide bombers detonated their explosives outside a historic church in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday, killing 75 people in the deadliest-ever attack on the country's Christian minority, officials said. 

A wing of the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the bombing in the city of Peshawar, saying it would continue to target non-Muslims until the United States stopped drone attacks in the country's remote tribal region. . . . 

At least 39 have died, 293 injured in shooting at Kenyan shopping mall

It seems that this is another mass public shooting that will greatly exceed the deaths in any US attack.  From the UK Daily Mail:

British and American nationals have undoubtedly been caught up in the 'callous and cowardly and brutal' terror attack at a shopping centre in Kenya that has left 39 people dead and 150 injured, according to Foreign Secretary William Hague. 

Mr Hague said 'we should be ready for that and aware of that' as he revealed a rapid deployment team is being sent to Kenya to help in the aftermath of the atrocity at an upmarket shopping centre in the capital.According to the Sunday Telegraph, a pregnant woman was among several Britons caught up in the attack. 

Somali-based militant group al-Shabaab has now claimed responsibility for the atrocity in which men armed with guns and grenades stormed the mall and targeted non-Muslims.Terrorist gunmen remain at the scene and police officers supported by the army are still fighting to bring the situation to an end. . . .

Apparently, Americans were among those killed.  From CNN:

The State Department said it had reports of American citizens injured in the attack but had no further details. It condemned "this senseless act of violence that has resulted in death and injury for many innocent men, women, and children." . . .

A French police official says the gun used to kill four people at a Jewish school Monday was the same gun used in attacks on three French paratroopers last week.
Police had been investigating a connection between the attacks after a gunman opened fire outside Ozar Hatorah school in the southwestern French city of Toulouse, killing a rabbi, his two sons and one other child, according to the prosecutor's office.
Prosecutor Michel Valet said a 30-year-old rabbi and his 3-year-old and 6-year-old sons were killed in the attack just before classes started at the Ozar Hatorah school.
Another child, the 8-year-old daughter of the school principal, was also killed, school officials said. Valet said a 17-year-old boy was also seriously wounded and in the operating ward of a city hospital.
"The drama occurred a bit before 8 a.m. A man arrived in front of the school on a motorcycle or scooter," Valet said, adding that the man got off his scooter outside the school and opened fire.
"He shot at everything he had in front of him, children and adults," he said. "The children were chased inside the school." . . .

This after two different public shootings in France last week:

A gunman on a motorbike opened fire on three French paratroopers at a bank machine Thursday in southern France, killing two and critically wounding one, officials said. It was the second such attack in a week targeting French soldiers. . . .
On Sunday, a 30-year-old paratrooper was fatally shot near a gymnasium in the southern city of Toulouse by an unidentified attacker. . . . .

UPDATE: This is an interesting new twist on the case. From the WSJ:

The man who gunned down four people at a school in this southern French city apparently filmed his attack, further convincing authorities that they are searching for a merciless killer who meticulously planned the shooting that has sparked horror and outrage across the country.

Investigators said Tuesday they fear the shooter, who may be connected to two recent attacks in the area that left three soldiers dead, could strike again.

Prosecutors say they have dispatched more than 200 specialized investigators, from anti-terrorist police to profilers to Internet experts, to Toulouse to help identify the shooter, who opened fire Monday at a private Jewish school, killing a father and his two young sons as well as an 8-year-old girl.

Prosecutors have said gunpowder was found on the heads of all the victims, suggesting they were shot at point-blank range. Interior Minister Claude Guéant, who is helping coordinate the hunt for the killer from Toulouse, said all the witnesses to the shootings at the school said the man "was cold and determined and showed great cruelty." . . .
