Mayors who belong to "Mayors Against Illegal Guns," represent virtually none of the mayors in the US
Many of the members of MAIG come from small population towns. I haven't checked through, but my impression is that the new members are also from relatively small places.
There are seven mayors from Arizona.

Mayors can join without the consent of elected local government or citizens, but it would be interesting to calculate what percentage of the population is represented by these mayors.
Do these mayors know that they are members? Do they have to pay dues, or are monies paid to them? Do any of them have staff moles who receive payment from MAIG?
Does MAIG have a newsletter? Emails to members?
Is it a non-profit? Does MAIG have an audit statement?
Can a disillusioned member make public any emails, newsletters, mailings from MAIG?
the fact that they represent only 950 of 35,000 is less relevant that the proportion of national homicides and population.
100 of 3100 counties in the US account for 68% of homicide while being only 54% of the population. 88% of those counties voted for Obama in 2012, providing him a net margin of 10 million votes (he only won by 3.4m).
If there was a spreadsheet would counties, i'd bet lunch at mortons that if i cross referenced it with CDC data by county, those 950 mayors would account for 70-80% of homicide in the country (really, their policies).
Dear DWB:
Sorry, but your numbers are not correct. 100 largest counties do not make up 54% of the population. I also think that they make up more than 68% of homicides. Where did you get these percentages?
top 200, not 100, sorry for the typo.
i used the homicides from the CDC wonder database, (which lets you download them by county).
http://wonder.cdc.gov
top as in: ranked by largest # homicides deaths.
I double checked my results using 2009/2010 average.
the cdc query tool is pretty straightforward to use; for the 09/10 average, these counties listed below account for 11700 (avg annual) homicide deaths, about 70%, and 164 million people, about 53% of the population. Not all counties are reported so there is some missing ("supressed") data. I (implicitly) assumed these were zero by ranking them, but if you assigned some sort of "average" homicide rate to these I think that they would drop out anyway because the average homicide rate for these counties is above average at 7 per 100k.
If you rank by homicide *rate* and pick 200, you DO get very different %. problem with that approach is that are a lot of small counties with 80k people and 6 homicides which could be 4 or 8 - and which push LA county CA far down in the list (LA has an average homicide rate of 7, but 700 homicides a year).
as for election returns, i got those from a news site (guardian), spot checked the results, and cross referenced (VLOOKUP) the county codes in the CDC report.
200 counties + county code, ranked by avg homicide, with population.
the total based on these for this 09/10 time period is about 11650 homicides of 16550 total (70%)
