When you wish that you had a gun to protect you?: Riots spread through out UK Cities

When the police aren't present what should people do to protect themselves and their property? In the UK, the answer is nothing. From Fox News:

A wave of violence and looting raged across London and spread to three other major British cities on Tuesday, as authorities struggled to contain the country's worst unrest since race riots set the capital ablaze in the 1980s.
In London, groups of young people rampaged for a third straight night, setting buildings, vehicles and garbage dumps alight, looting stores and pelting police officers with bottles and fireworks. The spreading disorder was an unwelcome view of London's volatility for leaders organizing the 2012 Summer Olympics in less than a year.
Police called in hundreds of reinforcements -- and made a rare decision to deploy armored vehicles in some of the worst-hit districts -- but still struggled to keep pace with the chaos unfolding at flashpoints across London, in the central city of Birmingham, the western city of Bristol and the northwestern city of Liverpool. . . .

If 1900, twenty year before the UK had really any gun control laws, there were only two gun murders and 5 armed robberies. That in a city of 6 million people where gun ownership was extremely common.

Government is always a hostile to the people entity but the question is how hostile, and this question can be answered by reply to the simple diagnostic battery-test questions. 1) How your government looks at armed citizens? A government that is a total enemy of the people (such as Stalin or Hitler) completely disarm their citizens. Relatively friendly pro-free-market governments of the US Midwest and South and especially Texas are OK with armed citizens while socialist-run Chicago, New York and Washington, DC disarm the people and "enjoy" as a result the murder and crime rampage. So, 1st test is 2nd Amendment;
2) 2nd diagnostic test is 1st Amendment. Absolute freedom lovers recognize no exception to the Freedom of Speech. The more totalitarian a person, party or a government is- the more exception they insert into the Freedom of Speech. Yes, you might hear ugly stuff, but nothing is perfect and unconditional Freedom of Speech is the only way to keep freedom in the country. Otherwise you open Pandorra box with one exception following another until the only "freedom" you have is a "right" to express politically correct totalitarian views (leftist, statist or similar ones)
3) 3rd test is attitude towards the island of Freedom in the Middle East- Israel as the only democracy in the region. True freedom lovers support the cause of freedom, thus, they support Israel (conservatives, libertarians, objectivist and other freedom-lovers). Overt and covert totalitarians (the Left, dictators, islamic countries) hate Israle in direct proportion to the degree of their totalitarianism. What UK needs now is about 1,000 times less government with zero interference into economy and society life (another Tatcher revolution although there's no true conservatives in UK anymore), analogues of 1st and 2nd Amendment with free gun carry- and the society in 2 generations will be as good as it gets.

"If 1900" = typo? Should that have been, "In 1900"?

Markie Marxist sez: "If people had guns with which to protect themselves and their property, we wouldn't be having all this lovely rioting, would we? We're burning down capitalist London, while our police stand by, watch it happen, and do little or nothing. If private citizens had guns, they might interfere with the activities of our Marxist/warrior/hero/criminals, and that just wouldn't be common communist sense. You do think it's important for people to be sensible, don't you?"
