Saying North Carolina requires "background checks on private transfers of guns" is a little misleading.
NC does require all handgun transfers to have either a "Pistol Purchase Permit" or a NC Concealed Handgun Permit, both of which require a background check.

However, by "guns", the statement isn't limited to handguns, long guns (rifles & shotguns) do NOT require a background check when transferring between two (2) citizens (no FFL involved).
