Student with handgun stored in his car defends himself from an attack by two men at Eastern Florida State College

Only recently have students with concealed handgun permits been able to store their guns in their cars on college campuses in Florida.  Well, it looks like we have a case where a student has been able to use a gun to defend himself from an attack.  From a news release by Eastern Florida State College:
One person was shot today and a second injured on the Palm Bay campus of Eastern Florida State College following a fight between a student and two men.
The incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. in the campus parking lot when a student who was in his car was approached by two men who pulled up in another vehicle.
One of the men got out of the car and began beating the student with a pool cue. The student pulled a handgun from his car, shooting and wounding the man in the chest.
Campus Security officers were on the scene within seconds and Palm Bay Police arrived about one minute later, securing the area.
The shooting victim and injured student were taken to local hospitals for treatment. The student was later released and the shooting victim was listed in stable condition.
The student has been identified as Landrick Hamilton, 24, of Palm Bay. Hamilton has been a full time student at the college since 2013 studying chemical technology. . . .
As expected, the university overreacted to the presence of a gun on the campus, placing the school on lockdown and canceling classes for the rest of the week.  Nor does it appear that the college understands the full import of the recent state court decisions regarding guns on campuses.

Florida Carry is suing the University of Florida over its ban to make sure that students have an effective means of self-defense on campus. http://www.firearmspolicy.org/2014/01/fpc-org-florida-carry-sues-univ-florida-gun-ban/

I don't think two men would just pull up on a campus and start beating a stranger with a pool cue. I bet the student somehow provoked this. Give us the whole story or nothing at all. Fl. has a law that says it has to take you a certain amount of moves to get to your gun when its in a vehicle. having a loaded gun with no lock device in your glove box isn't legal. anyone could shoot the police when pulled over. that is the reason for the law they have.

I lived in Palm Bay for 10+ years and I know when the incident happened at Winn Dixie and Burger King, with some guy last name Crutchly several citizens were arrested for pulling out guns from their vehicles and trying to shoot him before the police arrived.

Yeah Ned, that's what it was. He was asking for it! Maybe his clothes were too revealing and he deserved what he got?

You've never heard of people doing horrible things to people for no reason and without being provoked?

I don't even watch the news and I'm still able to hear of enough horrible stories that it constantly reminds me why I don't watch the news.

Having a gun does not mean you are going to start shooting police over a speeding ticket Ned. And what good is a gun that you cant to quickly if you are attacked. "hold on sir i need to get my gun...just gotta get my key, open my glove box, pull the box out unlock that box, then load it ...then im going to defend the hell out of my self.

Yes!!!!! Please do tell us the rest of the story... I support guns & our right to carry them...I even believe if you act in self defense you are right. Even if the young student did provoke the attack he still has the right to defend himself. We need to look at the bigger picture here & ask ourselves why we can't get along with each other. I live by the golden rule...treat people the way you want to be treated...if more people were Like that the world would be a better place.

Really Ned? You may want to re-read the law. If the student has a valid CPL, there is no law banning him or her from having the weapon loaded in the car with him, because of the college waived the regulation. This is taken from the link you posted. Sadly, criminals do not care what they use to attack a person and often people do not understand why they do what they do.

"The college will have counselors available for faculty, staff or students who may need them starting at 7 a.m. Monday on the Palm Bay campus. They will be available all day until 5 p.m. in Building 2, Room 159"

WOW are needed.
