Jimmy Stewart on individual freedom, Shenandoah

I saw that movie when it first came out (1965 -- yeah I'm that old) and still remember, shortly after that scene, some local turncoat bringing some Yankee soldiers to his farm.

Their commander threatens to confiscate some horses for their own use.

One of Stewart's sons asks him,
"What's "confiscate:" mean, Pa?"

To which he bites off (as only he can),

Later, he muses about that turncoat...
"...the only man -- I ever knew,
-- that started at the bottom,
-- and went down."
