2008 Democratic Platform on Gun Control

See page 48 here:

We recognize that the right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans' Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation, but we know that what works in Chicago may not work in Cheyenne. We can work together to enact and enforce commonsense laws and improvements - like closing the gun show loophole, improving our background check system, and reinstating the assault weapons ban, so that guns do not fall into the hands of terrorists or criminals. Acting responsibly and with respect for differing views on this issue, we can both protect the constitutional right to bear arms and keep our communities and our children safe.

Despite Obama's claims about the Supreme Court agreeing with him on overturning the DC gun ban, the statement that "we know that what works in Chicago" sure seems to support the Chicago gun ban.

Meanwhile, Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer is telling reporters that Obama "ain't ever going to take your gun away." But the DNC Platform discussions about the Chicago ban and "reinstating the assault weapons ban" seem inconsistent with that.

We recognize that the right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition (but it has no place in America's future), and we will preserve Americans' Second Amendment right to own and use firearms (as long as they've been rendered inoperable). We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation (which includes prohibition), but we know that what works in Chicago (hopefully no one will point out that it doesn't work in Chicago) may not work in Cheyenne (because they'd run us out of office if we tried). We can work together (by co-opting ignorant gun owners) to enact and enforce commonsense laws (any and every restriction we think of) and improvements (improvements in abusing gun owners!) - like closing the gun show loophole (eliminating gun shows), improving our background check system (so that it includes nearly everyone as a prohibited person), and reinstating the assault weapons ban (on every semiauto or repeater ever made), so that guns do not fall into the hands of terrorists or criminals (because even the law-abiding won't be allowed to have them!) . Acting responsibly (oppressively) and with respect for differing views on this issue (by pretending to listen to gun owners), we can both (pretend to) protect the constitutional right to bear arms and (pretend to) keep our communities and our children safe (while knowing that our actions will actually increase the body count we need to advance our gun ban agenda).
