I've heard recordings of other British shows & if the host disagrees with the guest, they can be very condescending in their tone & questioning.
to think critically, and therefore inquire critically, is something that a lot of talk television here in the US appears to lack, and i think that my opinion on this is shared overseas.
but i know what steve means: you sometimes get that tone or attitude in the UK despite what they actually know, or think they know, about a subject. that's another thing altogether. of course i freely admit that i don't even watch tv and am assuredly partially wrong in my estimation.
a little knowledge is dangerous. maybe we only seem uncritical if one only ever pays attention to our uncritical media outlets. pretty stark hypocrisy, that.
