For DC the ban on handguns is a safety issue
"We're going to fight to uphold a law that . . . has public support," Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) said at a news conference outside D.C. police headquarters. "The only possible outcome of more handguns in the home is more violence. Our appeal will help the District of Columbia be able to continue to reduce gun violence." . . . .
Other than referencing their opinion, what evidence do DC politicians have that murder or violent crime fell after the ban was instituted?

Markie Marxist sez: "It's a safety issue. We can't have our criminals getting shot! How are they supposed to bring down capitalism if the capitalists are armed? That wouldn't make any sense."
It would be interesting to take the outer limits of self-defense estimates in which firearms are involved (e.g. 80,000 times a year low and 2.5 million times a year high) and some REASONABLE estimate of the number of times injury or death are prevented and compare it to the violent firearm deaths and other firearm death categories. That is, is it more, the same, or less?
