It's a start. But a token armed guard on duty in a school essentially becomes an attacker's first target. This has, in fact, already happened, if memory serves, at an Indian school in the midwest.
It would be far better to allow properly trained, qualified school staff to carry carefully concealed weapons and to publicize the fact that school personnel are well trained and carrying, but never to reveal their identies, numbers or places of employment. An armed guard is certainly better than nothing, but an unnecessary expense if concealed carry, which costs nothing whatever for schools (any teacher with a concealed carry permit would be part of a ready pool) is implemented.
As a junior high teacher, and as a parent of 4, I would like to be able to carry concealed, legally, at my school. 3 of my own are in the building I teach in. It simply makes sense, since I've had training, and in addition, sucessfully competed in IDPA matches.
