Fred Thompson, in his initial interview on FOXNEWS Sunday, stated his view that illegal immigrants who are in this country now should be made legal. This is not conservativism, nor the faithful execution of the laws of the US. It is the rewarding of a criminal element that is breaking a whole series of laws including the wage and hours laws and the social security laws. Fred is no conservative; he just plays one on TV!
Saying that Thompson is not a conservative is not a serious comment. On taxes, regulation, gun control, a massive array of other issues, Thompson is as conservative as they come and he is extremely smart.
I heard the Fox News interview, and I don't think that you are doing it justice. Thompson said that he was in favor of first doing what he could to reduce the flow of illegals, that he would do what he could to enforce existing laws, and then he would address the question of those already in the country. But there are a lot of issues involved with this last point. For example, will they have to leave the country first.
