I was amazed how many different guides are easily available on how to make AR-15s from scratch. So if people can build AR-15s in their home, how stop someone who is seriously interested in getting one from doing so?
Of course, if you aren't interested in building an AR-15, how about an AK-47?
I would offer that I duck taped (yes, duck taped) two AR-15 magazines butt to butt after removing both floor plates, and then simply stacking the springs on top of each other. The feed lips held the bottom spring and place, and I simply taped the middle together. Within 5 minutes I turned a 20 and 30 round magazine into a 53 round magazine. It worked far far better than I expected it to. It even had the proper tension to activate the bolt lock after the last bullet had cycled. One could argue that a magazine ban would only effect those bound by law to not tape two Magpul p-mags together. I would be happy to upload the video.
