I saw this the other day. I have some Jewish friends whose parents escaped the nazis. I'd like noam to have a conversation with them of what a nazi is and what the regime was.
Now believing in limited government, individual rights (freedom of speech, religion, etc), private property, the ballot and other such things makes a person a Nazi?
Sheesh.
Obviously you guys didn't listen to what he said. He's seeing a comparison to the real issues that were going on in Germany to those of the US and how the unfortunate outcome for Germany was that the real issues got blamed on the wrong people by lunatics. I don't think there's a Jewish person out there that would deny that lunatics blamed them for the problems of Germany.
Sorry, toumvice, Chomsky is going much farther than simply claiming that the problems in Germany and the US are similar. He is explicitly comparing the type of message offered by Limbaugh and Fox News to the Nazis. He is saying that both involve messages of hate. I could go on, but I think that you have to go really far out of your way not to see that line of attack here.
John. I just listened again to what Chomsky actually said. He drew an analogy - which he cautioned was not a close one - between what caused extremism in Weimar Germany and what is causing extremism today in the United States. He's not equating the outcomes, he's comparing the reasons and forces that led to the outcomes. Surely you can see the distinction?
Dear Glen:
I provide little commentary myself and provide a link. Chomsky does compare Rush and Fox to the Nazis. I let people listen themselves to figure out how. That said, Chomsky says that Rush and Fox use similar rhetoric to the Nazis. Seriously? Rich liberals controlling corporations that don't care about Americans. In Germany it was the rich Jews who supposedly controlled companies and didn't care about people. This is not an accurate description of Rush or Fox and to compare the rhetoric in any way to the Nazis or to make the other supposed comparisons that Chomsky makes here is disgusting and should be condemned.
