911 not very helpful for this student

I find it very disturbing that the police will not release the 911 tape. I would hope that there is enough of a ruckus that there would be real pressure for them to release the tape. The story is here:

Police: Slain student apparently dialed 911; help not sent

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A college student apparently called 911 from her cell phone shortly before she was killed but a dispatcher hung up, failed to call back and never sent police to investigate, authorities said Thursday.

Madison Police Chief Noble Wray said it was too early to know whether a better response could have prevented the April 2 slaying of Wisconsin-Madison student Brittany Zimmermann or helped police capture her killer.

Authorities refused to release the content of the phone call, but Wray said it should have been enough for the Dane County 911 Center to take it seriously.

Thanks to Rich for sending this to me.

911 have always been unable to deliver what politicians promised. If the 911 operators, dispatchers and cops all are at the top of their game they won’t
get to you and sort out the good guys from the bad before you bleed to death. That's an impossible mission.

The 911 system does nothing but provide an illusion of security. We all must be prepared to use self-help or die waiting for the government.

A few days ago, in Montreal, I heard on the news AM station that a girl in the USA got "saved" by her cell phone. She heard someone come in the house, hid under her bed and text-messaged her mother. The mother called 911. When the police came in, the mother was fighting with a woman, one of the two home invader. They made a big mention that the police caught the home invaders. What a dangerous situation, for a woman to get into a naked hand combat with an home invader!

What was even odder, which annoyed me, is that the news bit was designed to glorify the calling of the 911. I could not help but think how faster the situation would have been resolved if the mother had pulled out a gun. It would also had acted as a deterrent to future possible invasions.

The second odd and troubling thing about this is: I heard the story over a radio station in Montreal that goes through an entire cycle of news, sports news, weather and traffic information every 9 minutes. The news spots are extremely brief and they cover only four or five 15 to 30 seconds stories non-stop and rotate the whole set of stories maybe four times a day at most. This AM station is aimed at people in their cars who need very frequent traffic information. So, all in all, this news bit, one pretty innocuous event happening over the whole north american continent, was broadcasted. Why ? Why such coverage? It reeked !
