Dennis Miller is awesome: Making a serious point about gun free zones
I also liked his joke about whining terrorists.

What terrorists may or may not understand, and what most Americans certainly do not understand is that the overwhelming majority of personnel on stateside military installations are absolutely unarmed. Usually, the only folks who regularly carry loaded firerms are the military police, whether serving common patrol duties or guarding entrance points, and soldiers standing guard around sensitive facilities. This is the state of affairs on most bases and posts unless things have recently changed.
What this means is that in terms of resisting an armed attack, most military bases would be essentially like a civilian shopping mall. Lots of targets, even fewer armed than in the civilian world (no such thing as concealed carry), and response times by armed police perhaps just a bit better than for civilians.
In short, if these New Jersey terrorists got weapons and made their way onto a base, they could indeed have done substantial damage. It might be time for the military to authorize more widespread weapons carrying, as even our stateside troops are now targets.
Dear Mike:
You are correct. But I was still happy to see Miller bringing up the point about gun free zones. It would be nice if officers and enlisted men were allowed to carry side arms with themselves. Thanks.
Ditto what Mike said. But I wonder if there's a more sinister reason for the deliberate defenselessness.
No, there is no conspiratorial reason involved. It's essentially a holdover from the Cold War mentality when an armed land attack on a continental US installation was just about the last possibility imaginable. Of course, the Clinton years didn't help with Clintonistas doing their best to emasculate the military in just about every way imaginable.
Time for our stateside commanders to wake up and realize that our stateside troops are targets, every day, all day.
